Foot and ankle fractures are rather common and frequently treated by podiatrists. While sports injuries are common since participants are more susceptible to experiencing constant stress and physical demands, anyone can suffer a foot fracture from merely tripping over a curb while crossing the street. Hairline fractures often have intermittent symptoms and can mimic other foot or ankle problems, so be sure to see your foot doctor for the proper diagnosis and treatment.

6 types of bone fractures that can affect your feet and ankles include the following:

1)    Compound fracture—This is the most complicated type of fracture that is characterized by the bone breaking through the skin.

2)    Comminuted fracture—When a bone fracture occurs in small pieces it is called a comminuted break.

3)    Oblique fracture—When a break happens on a zig zag pattern.

4)    Transverse fracture—A transverse fracture means the bone has broken longitudinally.

5)    Stabilized—When the ends of the broken bones are only a little bit out of alignment it is called a stabilized fracture.

6)    Hairline fracture—Also called stress fractures, these often occur from the repetitive stress of regular physical activity that occurs in sports and in people who are walking on hard surfaces all day for work. They are also more common in elderly folks who have osteoporosis.
